(NEXSTAR) – American distance runner Keira D’Amato is setting her sights on the 10k after her Olympic marathon trial did not go the way she had hoped.

“It was tough to process,” D’Amato said. “When I fall short or I fail, I learn my lesson and move on, and this one stung a little bit more.”

D’Amato says she is ready to pick herself back up. She now hopes to qualify for the 10k on the track in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“I have nothing to lose, everything to gain, and I have a chance to be an Olympian. Why would I not pursue that?” D’Amato said.

In 2020, D’Amato broke the American women’s 10-mile record with a time of 51:23.

D’Amato says in a way, not performing as well in the marathon trial took some of the pressure off her.

“I’m gonna go for it. I’m gonna put like my heart, my soul, my running shoes, everything I have into this, and we’ll see what happens.”

Back at double digits. 💛 I ran 10 miles today for Back at double digits. 💛

I ran 10 miles today for the first time since February 17.

For a marathoner, 10 miles doesn’t usually feel like much. But when it comes after 159 days of surgery, crutches, strength work, walk-run intervals, pool running, doubt, patience, and starting over… it feels like everything.

Funny how the same distance can mean something completely different depending on the journey it took to get there. And I’m really, really proud of that.

Dana and Me: Seems reasonable.

Sometimes the best memories come from the silliest rules.

And then somehow it became a soundtrack, about 1,000 inside jokes, and one of my favorite 43 hours stretches ever.

Love you, Dana Wana and Leadfoot Liane. Thanks for the laughs from LA to DC. 💛
It started with a double rainbow… and somehow just It started with a double rainbow… and somehow just kept getting better.

I’m so grateful to my Aunt @laurie_at_pyramid_house for opening up her home and welcoming us in. Getting to spend time with my cousins, @skg0404 and @brittagould, and watching all the kids make memories together was the best part of the trip.

There were dolphins, sea turtles, volcanoes, zip lines, muddy hikes, treasure hunts, beaches, late-night swims, and one mysteriously missing fork.

The adventures were unforgettable, but the people truly made the trip.

Until next time, Hawaiʻi. 🤍
